Shipwrecked on Fashion Island
By: David Mulvaney wit the LeBon Family
Designed by: Richard Krantz, AIA
From the diary of Rebecca Austen, shipwrecked 1899 en-route from Portsmouth, England to the West Indies.
"I was so surprised to be alive. My last memory was the shrieking of the ship as it pulled apart and the thrashing of the horses in the water as I frantically held on to my brother Charles. Suddenly, a calm and peace as I'd never felt before surrounded us as a nest of silky gray dolphins floated us to shore.
We were alone. Over the weeks we assembled a beach structure, aided by bits and pieces of the ship's final sighs and surrender to the battering of the waves. Chests with treasures intact, the chandelier...and even silverware came to us as we set up housekeeping.
We were alive, but lonely.
Our uncle's acquaintance, H.G. Wells, had regaled is with his theories of time travel several years ago, which after many attempts became a reality as our beach hut was lifted off the sand in one giant whoosh. When we lurched to a stop we found ourselves in the most unearthly, beautiful place. I struggled to make out the words "Fashion Island" on a signpost...we ventured out into our new world."
Modern day shipwreck survivors will find all the latest conveniences including electrical, cable, and modem hook-ups. An audio system with built-in speakers, authentic English hardware, antique crystal chandelliers, custom cabinetry, limestone countertops, ships wheel and bell, hurricane lamps, bamboo-clad exterior, hand-finished venetian plaster walls, an observation deck and many other custom touches will make the occupants hope a rescue party never arrives!
Many thanks to the wonderful contributors and craftspeople who have given so freely to help provide shelter to those who have found themselves on rough waters.

Frog Hollow
By: New Urban West with Cox, Castle, Nicholson, LLP
Designed by: Bassenian/Lagoni Architects
It's not easy being Greene and Greene, especially on such a diminutive scale. But that's the idea at the heart of Frog Hollow.
Based on the Greene brothers' famed Gamble House in Pasadena, Frog Hollow echoes the elements of their Craftsman style--the broad overhanging eave, the door and window detailing, and the rich texture of stone and shingle--only, here it's accompanied by the laughter of children.
The house is set behind an enchanting lily pond that functions as a "moat" complete with footbridge and flanking stone pillars. Gnomes and topiary deer surround the place with a magical air.
There's magic inside, too: up in the loft you'll find Kermit, three feet tall, wearing the Greenes' trademark straw hat. You can almost hear him saying, "Welcome to Frog Hollow. And thank you for your donation. That's very green of you!"

Newport Beach Fire Station 4 1/2
By: Newport Beach Firefighters Association
Designed By: Robert Hidey Architects - Harold Wong, Maria Larrea, Dina Bunch
To express their dedication and service to the community, the Newport Beach Firefighters Association proudly teams with Robert Hidey Architects to create this scale replica of our very own Balboa Island Fire Station 4.
Clang! Clang! Clang sounds the alarm, and another exciting adventure awaits the children responding to the emergency 911 call from Newport Station 4 ½. Whether upstairs in the "day room" or on the balcony, the always ready-for-action firefighter quickly responds to the apparatus room to don full "turn-outs" and hop aboard the shiny red fire engine.
Housed in the apparatus bay are a red fire engine and a fire chief's command vehicle. These two replica pedal cars come complete with mobile radios and headsets that are used to communicate with the crews working on the hose lines and scaling the ladders.
After a hard day of fighting fire the emergency crews return to the station to ready the equipment for the next alarm. Inside Station 4 ½ the young firefighter is surrounded by hand painted murals depicting authentic firehouse scenes. Built-in for added excitement and a quick response to the rig, Station 4 ½ is equipped with an interior fire pole and an exterior slide. The design team captures the classic theme of the real Balboa Island Fire Station consisting of stucco exterior and tile roof. This hometown theme is accented by the freestanding flagpole in front and clock tower perched at the roof peak which overlooks the community the firehouse stands to protect.
The Newport Beach Firefighters Association sincerely thanks all those that gave financial and product support towards the completion of this project. The Firefighters Playhouse Building Committee also thanks the rank and file Newport Beach Firefighters for their generous gift of volunteer hours and financial support to assist HomeAid. Because of their combined effort, the dream of excitement and adventure the child in all of us feels when we hear the scream of the siren and clang of the fire bell is brought to life in Newport Beach Fire Station 4 ½.

Une Maison Conte d'Fée
By: Osborne Development Corporation
Designed by: Danielian Associates
"A cottage in the French countryside," like "a summer afternoon," is the sort of phrase that evokes a misty-eyed and dreamy response. Here life doesn't race past in the same way - things happen at a slower pace. Living in a country cottage implies a relaxation of the barriers between indoors and out. Doors and windows can be left open so that the smell of lilacs can waft into the kitchen.
Here you can enjoy the pleasures of a country cottage conceived by architects whose dreams were fulfilled by craftsman who gave their undivided attention to every nook and cranny. And the charm of this magical country cottage is matched only by today's most modern conveniences, including a security system, slate roof, copper flashing, hardwood floor, shutters, operational plumbing and electrical, flagstone decking, stone veneers and inlaid wood and stained glass doors.
May the inhabitants of "Une Maison Conte d'Fée" enjoy the pleasures, along with the satisfaction of knowing that their generosity has given others less fortunate a much-needed hand.

Bullwinkle's Lodge
By: Pacific Design Estates
Designed by: Sinclair Associates Architects
Imagination is the cornerstone of youthful adventure and "Bullwinkle's Lodge", is a stone and wooden lodge of whimsy and fantasy reminiscent of a hidden forest retreat. Young imaginations can soar to the stars through the solarium, safely encounter cartoon creatures on the lodge TV and comfortably enjoy appointments such as a stone fireplace, hewn wood floors and cabinets from custom leather lodge chairs on a "bearskin" rug.
Pacific Design Estates, their contributing suppliers, renowned architect, Robert Sinclair AIA, and acclaimed interior designer, Karen Butera, collaborated to create a child's call to the wild world of woodland imagination as their contribution to Project Playhouse in support of HomeAid's continuing efforts to provide housing for the temporarily homeless of Orange County.

Three Little Pigs
By: Pardee Homes
Designed By: Bassenian/Lagoni Architects
There's no one happier than our Three Little Pigs, coming home after a long day's work to their comfortable new house.
The interior is absolutely "comfy" with a lounge chair and window seat for reading and relaxing. There's a bubbling pot of "wolf stew" on the fire in their quaint kitchen with all the amenities. There's even a bowl of milk for their pet kitten, who's also enjoying dinner.
And, of course, it's carefully constructed from all three preferred building materials - sticks, straw and bricks. But not to worry, it's a quality, Pardee-built home, so no amount of huffing and puffing will blow this house down!

Fijian Bure
By: David Rolfe, ASLA & Associates/Cannon Constructors, Inc.
Designed by: Dora Taylor, Associate AIA
This bamboo clad, hand painted playhouse is reminiscent of the bures that the people of Fiji have lived in for several centuries along the beaches and in the rainforest areas of this beautiful country.
Beyond the beauty of the islands is the warmth, generosity and inner beauty of its people.
This bure has been built by the hands of people generous in spirit that want to see the children of Orange County and their families sheltered from the elements and protected from harm.
