The HOME House Project
The HOME House project is an ambitious, multi-year initiative that examines the challenges of designing affordable, sustainable housing. The project was launched by the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and challenges architects and designers to create homes that address the three key pillars of housing: sustainability, affordability, and design.
The project has been a popular destination for many homeowners, spanning over six seasons. In recent seasons, the project has transformed the 1835 barn of Dick and Sandra Silvas in Concord, Massachusetts, and a 1907 Craftsman-style bungalow in Santa Barbara. The show has also begun its 20th anniversary by renovating an 1886 Queen Anne-style Victorian in Watertown, Massachusetts, and will now move to Key West, Florida to renovate a circa 1886 Conch Captain home.
A housing project is a comprehensive development of buildings, land, and equipment used to build affordable housing for low and middle-income families. It may involve landscaping, gardening, and other site considerations. It may also involve demolition or alteration of existing structures. For instance, a housing project might include a hospital or a school.
Another model of housing is the National House Project, a programme that helps young people with care experience move into their own home. It aims to provide a safe place for young people to establish a healthy, supportive relationship with their new landlords. The National House Project also provides support to the local house projects. Its goal is to reduce the number of young people in residential care entering adulthood and to help them find the skills to live independently.
Kaleshia Sostre is a 28-year-old mother of three. She had her first child at the age of 19. She was worried about the social stigma of being a young parent, struggling to make ends meet, and providing a safe and stable home for her child. Samora Coles, the project’s co-founder, gave her advice and support.
The project, which is being managed by the Manhattan Community Board, is expected to create 200 new affordable and supportive housing units. It will also include a medical facility on the first floor. NYC Health + Hospitals, which operates public hospitals, is the owner. However, it is unclear if medical care providers will renew their leases after the new construction is completed.
