The House Project
The House project was a learning investigation that involved exploring houses, and the people who live in them. The 3- and 4-year-olds in Laura and Sandy’s morning and afternoon classes participated in the project for approximately 2 months. The House project began with reading and retelling different versions of the story The Three Little Pigs. The children acted out the stories, and they represented their understanding through drawing and dictation (Figures 1-6). The class also learned about the features of different types of houses, such as stairs, windows, doors, roofs, and chimneys, by graphing them. During the House project, the children also began thinking about their own homes and how they like them. Then, they compared those homes to the house they were working on in school and reflected on their similarities and differences.
The first step in a home improvement or construction project is laying the foundation. This can take a long time and usually involves removing the existing soil, digging trenches for plumbing and electrical, pouring concrete and laying down the foundation. Once the foundation is laid, the builder can begin constructing the framing of the house. This involves building the floor system, walls, and roof. The frame is then sprayed with a waterproof coating to protect it from the elements.
Once the framing is completed, it is time for the plumber and electrician to install pipes, wires, and other necessary fixtures such as faucets and light fixtures. This can be a labor-intensive and costly process. Once the plumbing is complete, drywall can be installed, which may take up to a month. Then, the painters can come in and finish up the interior.
Another important aspect of any home project is landscaping. This can be expensive, but it adds a lot of value to the home. It is also a great way to increase the curb appeal of the property.
Seed House project is an effort to provide housing for emancipated foster youth in need of a safe place to stay while they work to gain independence and achieve life goals. The project also offers a family-oriented environment to promote healthy development and well being. Many young people aging out of the foster care system are unprepared to enter the world of independent living and struggle with finding stable employment, housing and relationships. This is especially true of young men. As a result, they are often homeless or living in unstable situations. The Seed House project is designed to help these youth by offering a stable and nurturing home environment where they can develop the skills they need for success. It is hoped that this project will provide a safe haven for those in need and serve as a model for other communities. The Seed House Project has helped over 100 individuals to date. The organization plans to continue to offer assistance to young adults. If you’d like to donate to the Seed House project, please visit their website for more information.
